How to Improve Your Aim in FPS Games: A Routine That Works
Better aim is less about talent and more about removing excuses one by one: a consistent sensitivity, a steady frame rate, good crosshair placement, and a little daily practice. Here's a routine that fits into a normal gaming session.
1. Fix your settings first
If your sensitivity keeps changing, your muscle memory never settles. Pick one and keep it for weeks. Check your eDPI (DPI × sensitivity) with the eDPI calculator; most tactical-shooter players do well in a fairly low range. Make sure your game runs at a stable frame rate with the FPS calculator.
2. Crosshair placement beats flicks
Keep your crosshair at head height and where enemies are likely to appear. Good placement means you barely have to move to land the first shot, which matters more than any flick.
3. A 15-minute warm-up
- 5 minutes of tracking a moving target.
- 5 minutes of flicks between targets, focusing on stopping cleanly.
- 5 minutes in a deathmatch, only aiming for heads.
4. Review, don't just grind
Watch back a couple of your deaths each week. Most aim problems are actually positioning or crosshair placement. Track your progress with the KDA calculator over weeks, not single matches.
5. Check your reaction time on your setup
The reaction time test shows how quickly you act on what you see, including your monitor and mouse delay. If it's slow, hardware like a higher refresh-rate screen can help more than practice.
