FPS and frame time are the same thing, inverted

FPS counts how many frames your PC renders each second. Frame time is how long each of those frames takes, in milliseconds: 1000 divided by FPS. Frame time is the more honest number, because a steady 8 ms feels far smoother than an average of 120 FPS that keeps spiking.

Matching FPS to your monitor

A monitor can only display as many frames as its refresh rate. On a 144Hz screen, a new image can appear every 6.9 ms. Running well below that wastes the monitor; running far above it mostly costs heat and power. With adaptive sync, capping a few frames under the refresh rate keeps things smooth.

Where this matters most

Fast shooters like Valorant and CS2 reward high, stable FPS because every millisecond of delay adds up with your own reaction time. In slower single-player games, a locked 60 or 90 with stable frame times is often the better experience.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert FPS to frame time?+

Frame time in milliseconds = 1000 ÷ FPS. At 60 FPS each frame takes 16.7 ms, at 144 FPS 6.9 ms, and at 240 FPS 4.2 ms.

Is FPS above my refresh rate useless?+

Not entirely. Your monitor can only show as many frames as its refresh rate, but rendering faster can still lower input delay slightly in some games. The trade-off is more heat, power and possible tearing.

What FPS cap should I use with G-Sync or FreeSync?+

A common practice is to cap a few frames below your refresh rate, for example 141 FPS on a 144Hz screen, so the game stays inside the adaptive-sync range.

Why do my games feel stuttery even at high FPS?+

Average FPS hides uneven frame times. Spikes in frame time, often from background apps, thermal throttling or a CPU bottleneck, feel like stutter even when the FPS counter looks high.
