Free Fire India launched on 28 October 2026, more than four years after the original Free Fire was blocked in India in February 2022. It's a free, standalone game from Garena on Google Play and the App Store. It runs on India-based servers and has daily playtime limits: 6 hours for adults, 3 hours for under-18s. Players under 18 need a parent's consent to sign up. Free Fire MAX is still available alongside it.

The road back: from ban to launch

  1. 1February 2022: the Government of India blocks 54 apps under Section 69A of the IT Act, including the original Garena Free Fire. The game had around 40 million monthly players in India at the time. Free Fire MAX was not on the list.
  2. 2August 2023: Garena announces Free Fire India, with MS Dhoni as brand ambassador and a 5 September 2023 launch date.
  3. 3September 2023: the launch is postponed on the eve of release.
  4. 428 October 2026: Free Fire India finally goes live.

What's new in Free Fire India

The core game is the Free Fire players know: Battle Royale (50 players, matches of about 10 minutes), Clash Squad (4v4) and Craftland custom maps. The India edition adds several changes:

  • Daily playtime limits: up to 6 hours a day for adults and 3 hours for players under 18. When you hit the limit, the game locks until the timer resets.
  • Break reminders pop up at regular intervals during long sessions.
  • Parental consent: players under 18 need a parent or guardian's consent, verified by OTP on the parent's mobile number, before creating an account.
  • Spending caps for underage players. Garena hasn't published the exact amount.
  • Toned-down visuals: red blood effects are removed and some intense effects are softened. Gameplay is unchanged.
  • India-first content: local events and themes, starting with the Diwali campaign.

Free Fire India vs Free Fire MAX

  • Both are available. Free Fire MAX hasn't been removed. You can keep playing it.
  • India accounts only. Free Fire India accepts India-region accounts. Accounts from other regions are pointed to Free Fire MAX.
  • Playing together: Garena says the two share an account system, so Free Fire India and MAX players can play together and join the same events.
  • On iPhone: reports say signing in with an Apple ID you already use for MAX creates a new Free Fire India account rather than moving your MAX progress. Your MAX account isn't affected. Check before you commit to one.

How to download Free Fire India safely

  2. 2Check that the publisher is Garena.
