Scrims vs Tournaments: What's the Difference and Why It Matters

Team HangOn·1 Apr 2026·4 min read

If you're getting into competitive play, you'll hear 'scrims' constantly. Here's what they are and why serious teams play far more scrims than tournaments.

Scrims: practice against real teams

A scrim (scrimmage) is a practice match against other teams, usually with no prize or a small one. The point is realistic practice: real opponents, tournament rules, no pressure.

Tournaments: results that count

Tournaments have brackets, prizes and rankings. They test what you practised.

How to use both

  • Play scrims several times a week.
  • Enter tournaments when your scrim results are consistent.
  • Review scrims honestly — that's where improvement happens.

When you're ready, find tournaments near you or online on HangOn.
